new HD, no previous OS disk?

My HD on my 6 yr old compaq started making a bad, clacking noise on startup,
and then would hang my puter, so I bought a new HD. I also bought windows
xp, home edition. upon attempting to install windows xp I get the message...
setup could not find a previous version of windows on your computer etc.
it also asks to me to insert a disk for the os, to verify eligibility for
this "upgrade"
Here's the problem... I don't have a disk for the os, it was windows 98se, I
put the "quikrestore" disks in but they don't qualify or whatever.

hope that's enough info, thanks ahead of time for any assistance you might
provide.

You bought an upgrade version of XP Home, not a full verison; therefore, to
install it you need to prove you have a valid 'upgrade path' which means an
earlier verion of Windows. If you don't have the 98SE disk then you can't
install it. Take the upgrade back to the store and buy the full version.

Is your old hard drive still usable at all? Try installing it as a
second (slave) hard drive in the computer and then run the install.
Even though you are installing onto the new hard drive the upgrade
program should detect the existing Windows 98 and be satisfied with
that. Once Windows is installed you can shut down the computer and
remove the old hard drive.

If that doesn't work or if your old hard drive is not usable then your
next option would be to use the "quickrestore" disks to install
Windows 98 onto the new hard drive and then run the Windows XP
upgrade.

Good luck

Simply set new drive as master, unplug all other hds, you'll need to install
98,once installed,install xp cd,install xp.With a oem recovery cd this is the
only way to install the upgrade, otherwise locate a 95,98,or ME cd for
verification,
or purchase the complete xp installation cd.Dont try installing xp with 2 hds
connected like the other post recommended, youre xp OS would end up corrupted.

Thanks Jerry, Ron, and Andrew I appreciate you taking the time to post...

the last time I tried starting the computer with the old HD, it made the
clacking noise, and wouldn't start, I didn't try starting with it as the
slave though. What about what Andrew said about xp becoming corrupted if I
install with 2 hd connected?
Thanks again for the info

Andrew E. is not necessarily the one you want to listen to for advice on
computing. =)

Andrew E. is a blithering nincompoop who persists in giving out false
or misleading information. The next time he gives a correct answer
will be the first.
