I struggled at the first with parallel use of
my IBM TP X40 trackpoint and an external USB mouse.
It maybe because I do not move the external mouse often,
it becomes dead now and then. After I played with different
settings, I have a new problem now. The new-found-hdware
refuses to go away, nor can I install external mouse properly.

I checked regedt, but it does not list LPENUM under the dir.
There are some numbered dirs under the USB directory, but I
dare not delete them.

Please help!

PS: I think MS really mess up with XP this time. Devices installation
is the last thing to automate, but they want to achieve it now?

Automatic Device detection using USB has been built in,
for some time now, usually just unpluggin and pluggin it
back in is enough, to fire off the detector.
Do you have a USB hub, or are you using an addin board for
extra USB ports??
Have you made sure you're up to date on your USB drivers?
