Win XP Pro (sp2)
IE & OE 6
Creative cordless keyboard/mouse (drivers under HIC)..works ok.

I wish to install a wireless router kit to my desktop, but I wish to ensure
I have no USB device manager errors before I attempt it.

I am unable to solve my device manager showing an exclamation mark against
"USB CONTROLLER", under OTHER DEVICES.
I am unaware of any USB hardware not working correctly...IE printer, scanner
etc.

The only clue I may have is I have recently tried unsuccessfully to
re-install my USB card reader, which worked ok with Win98se, but I was
unable to "find" WinXP drivers, so I aborted further attempts. As far as I
am aware no trces of Card reader exists.

It would be a tremendous help if I new what the usb device was &
where.....Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrhh

TIA

Just delete it from the devices. If there is something there it will be
redetected.

Every USB device has a unique identifier called a VID. When
XP cannot find an .Inf match for the VID it should prompt you
for a driver. If you cancel, etc...then XP places the device in
the "Other" category. You need to go to Device Manager &
click View, tic "Show Hidden Devices". Expand the Universal
Serial Bus Controllers category. Go through the list and locate
any Phantoms (Shown as a light shade of Gray) and Uninstall
each phantom entry. You should also check the other device
categories Except System Devices, Non-Play and Play and the
Sound category for any Phantoms and remove those as well.

Afterwards download the latest Chipset Driver package for
your motherboard, install and reboot the PC.

Your post has help greatly to have found at least what it is now!!!!!!!
It was a hidden device under KEYBOARDS, and it's name was"PC/AT PS/"
keyboard (84 key), which I no longer use as I have cordless as stated, so I
have unistalled this device via device manager etc.
I have no GREYED (phantoms), but after all that I still have that damn "new
hardware wizard" coming up on startup relating to the USB controller to find
etc.(under other devices still).
The only thing left is the last suggestion in your post..........download
the latest chipset driver package for my V333U motherboard if I can locate
it??

Terry

Everest home software shows :
MOTHERBOARD: Jetway V333 Pro/V333U
M/B CHIPSET : Via VT8367 Apollo KT333
BIOS TYPE: Award (09/23/02)

Confused now: (newby)
I have been on the Via related sites but it is a like a mine field to me,
with all the various mass of details/warnings etc. and I could not determine
WHAT exactly was the driver for me, and dangers relating to updating the
chipset?
Possibly asking too much from you guys to help any further with firm
guidelines from info' provided above??
I did d/l a USB driver, but then I am unsure if it the right thing to do
based on more info' from where I d/l it from, stating it can be installed
after the microsoft d/l whatever that meant!
I tread with extreme caution due to bios upgrade "disasters" I read about in
these newsgroups who I must say have been very very helpful on other PC
subjects.
I gratefully respect your inputs.

Being cautious is fine, but installing a motherboard Chipset Driver isn't
all that complicated. The Hyperion 4-in-1 is a zip module. The module
is around ~6.0 Megabytes in size. Once downloaded, using Explorer -
you Right Click the file VIA_HyperionPro_V500A.Zip. A context menu
will appear, Left Click "Extract All". The Compressed Folder Wizard
will open. Click Next. The destination will be set to a sub-folder of
where the .Zip module resides. Click Next. Click Finish. An Explorer
window will open showing you the "Extracted" folder, Double-Click
the Folder VIA_HyperionPro_V5.00A.0. Another Folder view will
appear - Locate the file Setup.Exe, Double-Click this module and the
install process will begin. Once completed, Reboot your machine &
the appropriate drivers will have been updated.

Downloaded Hyperion 4-in-1 driver .exe (1.36mb only tho'!!).maybe it was not
the exact one??
Intalled but Still the same old story...New hardware wizard...USB controller
driver!!
I have DISABLED in device manager for time being...leaving a red cross on
"that" entry under other devices.
I will not be attending my PC for a few days now.....

Terry, you could try this to see if there are any "phantom" devices
causing this to happen:

Open up a Command Prompt window and type:

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 <enter>

start devmgmt.msc <enter>

You must keep this Command window open while you look in Device Manager,
otherwise the setting will be lost.

In Device Manager, on the View menu, check Show hidden devices. You
should now be able to see any extra entries or grayed-out "ghosts" of
hardware that is installed but not currently connected to the computer.

Hope this helps
