New e-mail account

I have bought a new computer and I have set up windows mail. I am trying to
send an e-mail with an attachment to a friend, but I keep getting a message
saying that the server connection has timed out. I have extended the time it
tries to connect to the server to 5 mins but it is still getting timed out.

Any idea what the problem could be?

Then uninstall your antivirus program, reboot, and try sending.
After you get your email working again, you will need to install
a non-intrusive antivirus program such as the free AVG or Avast.
Whichever antivirus you select, be sure to NOT enable the email
scanning option.
