new Defender beta

When I try to to download the latest Beta Defender, the wizard gives me the
choice of two programs to pick from, saying choose the one most suitable for
me? How is one supposed to know?

Try;
WindowsDefender.msi

The X64 is the 64bit installer - unless you have the 64bit XP Pro (which most
do not have) you will want "WindowsDefender.msi"

Having read some of the posts here, Im rather inclined to wait til some of
the bugs are ironed out. this new beta doesnt look very safe?

This is beta software. If you don't feel confident using beta software,
you shouldn't use it.
