Are available Version 5723
Steve

How do I get it?

Mine says:

Spyware Definition Version: 5721 (5/27/2005 4:00:55 PM)

But when I try to update it says "Most recent spyware
definitions installed." Is there is a way to manually
download and install the definitions?

Wait and try again later today, maybe MS rolling out this update
on all update servers around the world and yours havent been updated.

Mine is updating as I write. I would simply try again later. This is
likely an issue with load balancing and multiple servers--it probably simply
isn't yet available on the server you are reaching.

Okay, I waited all day as you suggested and it still says I
have the most recent definitions 5/27/005. I've tried
manual updating many times. I've tried updating the
program from control panel. I've tried removing

gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd
gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd

and IT STILL WON'T UPDATE.

If it is telling you that you've got the most recent, it isn't seeing
anything newer at the server, I suspect. Is there any way for you to test
this via a different ISP--a dialup, say?

It's 9pm and still no updates. I tried updating the
program in control panel. I tried removing the

gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd
gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd

files.

Nothing works. I have automatic updates enabled and I've
been trying manually all day. No way can I get this update.

HELP!!!

I'm using SBC DSL. I tried dialup SBC but got the same
message. I can't get the update.

Okay. I gave up trying to update the definitions. Instead
I uninstalled and re-installed the program downloading the
whole install fresh from the web. It came with the current
definitions.

FWIW, I checked another computer on my LAN and it had
already updated automatically, so the problem was something
at my end, not a problem with the server or my ISP.

Also my fresh install already has an error logged:

7::ln 10:Out of
memory::gcasDtServ:ScheduleScans:Update::6/3/2005 9:43:50
PM:1.0.509

I have no idea what this means.

Errors.log is well worth ignoring, unless it gets too big to ignore. There
are only a handful of errors in there that have ever led to useful diagnoses
in these groups, and they probably have bigger symptoms in terms of
visibility in the UI--i.e. we don't need those error messages to tell what
fix is needed.

Hmm --I agree this doesn't seem like it was anything to do with the network
or the servers. I do want to challenge the notion of the new download
"coming with" the latest definitions, though. I had a chance to test this
earlier this week, and the defs in the download were 5687 as advertised.
What has changed, I think, is that there is an update happening
automatically at some point--I don't think I understand the behavior well
enough to describe it accurately.

Thanks - I have the impression that issues about difficulty updating are
something Microsoft wants to get a better handle on at this point so the
more details like this the better.

Hi Bill,

I can confirm your reservations about the latest defs coming with a fresh download of the program.
I was having difficulty yesterday morning getting this test machine to update from 5719 to 5723,
so I did a fresh install of MSAS on another machine here and as with your test experience
it came with def 5687.

I could not get that machine to update from 5687 to 5723 either after the fresh install, I kept
getting the message "Most recent spyware defenisons installed" on both machines.

Finally(about three hours later...11:48 EDST)I was able to get both machines updated to the
latest def, from 5719 to 5723 on the original test machine and from 5687 to 5723 on the machine
with the fresh install of MSAS.

And did you ever figure out why it worked at 11:48, and not before? Your
situation sounds like network/server issues, I guess--you had two different
machines, one with a fresh install, and neither able to update.

No sure if this helps, but I just realized I was logging an
Application Management system error 7023 each time I tried
a manual update:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 6/3/2005
Time: 9:39:05 PM
User: N/A
Computer: OEMCOMPUTER
Description:
The Application Management service terminated with the
following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

This may be helpful.

The application management service, according to the references I'm looking
at, is responsible for what goes on during add/remove programs operations.

I don't see why this service would be in play during this update operation,
but that probably just shows how little I know about the operation of the
program.

I'm tempted to say that given this symptom, uninstalling and reinstalling
might be a good way to go--and that does seem to have worked for you.

Thanks for reporting this--I'll see what I can do with the information.

<snip>"network/server issues"</snip>

That would be my guess as well Bill, it's generally a couple of hours before the
updates are available to me here-after they've been reported as available
in this group. Sometimes as late as mid afternoon after they've been reported
as available in this group in the AM.

The main thrust (in my reply to you) was to help dispel the notion that a fresh download
of the program automatically comes with the current defs. I've never found this to be
the case although I've seen it reported as such in a couple of threads in this group
over time.

Keep up the good work Bill,

Don

Thanks, Don--I think some are confused by the fact that in some cases (can't
precisely define it--the program does an update on its own, without the
usual autoupdate UI, on startup.
I agree--the download is as labelled at the download site--5687, as I
recall.
