New Definitions (5691) - Auto Update Still Flaky in v1.0.509

D

DLKR

Downloaded v1.0.509 yesterday. I have it set to autocheck for new definitions
at 10 AM every day and to notify me when new defs are available. This morning at
10 AM I didn't see any traffic (watching ZAF firewall), so I don't think MSAS
autochecked for new defs (the original beta didn't autocheck at 10 AM either).
At ~3:30 PM local time) a MSAS window popped up telling me that new spyware
definitions were available. The download went OK.
The date and time on the MSAS System Summary Page showed the correct update time
and date but the info under Help/About MSAS showed the old defs (5689) and the
new date (same as first beta version). Clicking File/Update didn't download
anything, but (again same as with the original beat) did update the defs to
5691.
So it doesn't seem as though the new beta addressees any of these problems.

I'm not sure the new defs were available at 10 AM today. I don't know what
timezone you are in, but I didn't become aware of them until afternoon U.S.
EST.

Well, I have mine set to download everyday at 6:00PM and it did not do
it. I just now downloaded them after reading this post.

I've been manually updating machines and haven't had a chance to observe any
that have auto-update set to run at a time this afternoon or later.

Autoupdater is set to 8 AM. Just booted this sys 1/2 hour ago and it
still has not updated. Checked in Help, About, and it's still 5689. Just
in case I'd missed the update notice, clicked Diagnostics. Still 5689.
Will post when it updates.

Bill,
I'm in the mountain time zone.
Re MSAS autoupdate:
I can see activity on my firewall (ZAF) when NAV checks for updates. If no
updates are found the activity is short lived. If updates are found then, of
course, there's more activity as the updates are downloaded (I have NAV set to
autodownload the new antivirus defs).
Using the same reasoning, since I didn't see any firewall activity at 10 AM, I'm
assuming that the MSAS autoupdate didn't trigger.
When the MSAS window popped up stating there were new spyware defs available I
wasn't monitoring the firewall activity so I missed the extent of firewall
activity.

The original MSAS beta didn't autocheck for updates at 10 AM either. But once,
at 8:30 PM I got the MSAS popup window stating there were new spyware defs
availabe and downloaded them.
This isn't a big problem, just sort of weird.
I enjoy reading the MSAS newsgroups and especially appreciate those of you who
bear the brunt of answering questions - some of them over and over and over :)

The scheduling and timing issues with this beta are so wierd that I've given
up trying to make sense out of them by and large, and just enjoy seeing the
varieties of flakeyness evidenced by posts here.

I know that doesn't do the folks reporting the issues any good, and I
apologize for my lack of great workarounds. At this point, I've reset my
scheduled scan to 10:00 AM to check whether the appearance bug had been
fixed. It hasn't.

I now get two scans within a few seconds of each other at 10:00 AM. And
neither shows any UI during the scan, which might be nice except that I've
tried to turn that back on and not succeeded!

I don't know when autoupdate is scheduled on this machine. I do see it
working on machines in offices I admin, on machines that are on 24 hours a
day--but I haven't tried to see whether it is actually running at the time
scheduled!

i have v1.0.501 downloaded today from MS website. it also
told me that it downloaded the latest defs. when i checked
i still have 5685. a manual update made it 5691.

btw, where'd you get v1.0.509??

B

Bill Sanderson

FWIW, once you DO get .509, it comes with 5687 at this writing.

I believe, but haven't verified, that it won't overwrite newer defs--I'd
love to hear from someone who can verify this.

..509 [should be!] available from the download center--via

Possibly because your ISP has an old copy cached in a web proxy cache.

When I use the link Stevie posted, I get a file which is bit for bit
identical (according to FC) with a file I downloaded using via
www.microsoft.com/spyware

So, yes--I'd say that's a genuine link.

Bill,
Since MSAS doesn't use the Windows scheduler, do you have any ideas re how MSAS
is handling the scheduled "autocheck for updates" and the "scheduled spyware
scan" features?
Can this sort of scheduling be accomplished thru registry entries?
Re you comment that autoupdate scheduling works on machines running 24 hrs/day -
I'm going to leave mine running for a couple for days and see if that makes any
difference.
