New Definitions (5691) - Auto Update Still Flaky in v1.0.509

B

Bill Sanderson

Great--that is how I'd expect the design to work, but I haven't observed it
carefully. There are a number of reports here where it appears that older
versions are coming in over newer ones, but I believe they are due to an
appearance bug, rather than real problems with definitions overwriting newer
ones.

FWIW, once you DO get .509, it comes with 5687 at this writing.

I believe, but haven't verified, that it won't overwrite newer defs--I'd
love to hear from someone who can verify this.

.509 [should be!] available from the download center--via
www.microsoft.com/antispyware. See my reply to another of your messages.

i have v1.0.501 downloaded today from MS website. it also
told me that it downloaded the latest defs. when i checked
i still have 5685. a manual update made it 5691.

btw, where'd you get v1.0.509??

-----Original Message-----
Downloaded v1.0.509 yesterday. I have it set to autocheck
for new definitions
at 10 AM every day and to notify me when new defs are
available. This morning at
10 AM I didn't see any traffic (watching ZAF firewall), so
I don't think MSAS
autochecked for new defs (the original beta didn't
autocheck at 10 AM either).
At ~3:30 PM local time) a MSAS window popped up telling me
that new spyware
definitions were available. The download went OK.
The date and time on the MSAS System Summary Page showed
the correct update time
and date but the info under Help/About MSAS showed the old
defs (5689) and the
new date (same as first beta version). Clicking
File/Update didn't download
anything, but (again same as with the original beat) did
update the defs to
5691.
So it doesn't seem as though the new beta addressees any
of these problems.

I do know that reports here suggest that the machine must be on and with an
(administrator?) logged in, for updates to proceed as scheduled. That
wouldn't surprise me, with the current design.

Never take anyone's word for it: check the Digital Signature for yourself.

Right click, Properties, tab Digital Signatures, select the signature, click
Details.
Look for "This digital signature is OK".

right so i downloaded both from the MS provided link and
Stevie's link. i did this:

1. did an inplace upgrade, check version, still 1.0.51.
2. removed msas, did a fresh install of both (one at a
time after removing the first), still 1.0.51.
3. removed all traces of msas (from hd and registry),
rebooted, reinstalled (again both one at a time), still
1.0.51.

*shrugs*

i give up. i think i'll enjoy this version for now. at
least i have the latest defs.

When I use the link Stevie posted, I get a file which is bit for bit
identical (according to FC) with a file I downloaded using via
www.microsoft.com/spyware

So, yes--I'd say that's a genuine link.

hmm, why would you have it when MS download site doesn't?

Possibly because your ISP has an old copy cached in a
web
proxy cache.

Just did a little test on a bug that was brought up in this thread :

Unable to re-active some Application Agents
microsoft.private.security.spyware.appcompat
Posted by : Baldrick

Ran the Update mechanism from Add/Remove and the def was still not
updated. The Agent reactivation issue was fixed though.

B

Bill Sanderson

That's very strange. I don't think any code changes have ever been released
through that mechanism, I wonder what's going on?

B

Bill Sanderson

Does your ISP run a proxy? I'm not sure what the best way around that would
be, but that seems the most likely cause--you could be sure by checking the
digital signature date.

It finally updated. Checked in Help, About and it showed 5689. Did
Diagnostics, no change. Did the manual update and it changed to 5691.

That bug hasn't been fixed. I've seen that myself multiple times, even
under the newest beta code. I don't think they touched the autoupdater.

I'm skeptical about Diagnostics as a fix, but a manual update (which in fact
doesn't do an update) has worked for me every time.
