New Boot Screen Failure

S

Sean

I changed my boot screen using StyleXP, I restarted to
see the new boot screen, and I got the blue screen saying
there was a fatal error and that the comptuer was
stopped. The ntoskrnl.exe file is probably not able to
be used, or maybe the copy of the other ntoskrnl.exe file
is corrupting everything.
Either way, I can't get into Windows, not even safe mode,
and I also tried to boot from the last working
configuration.

Please help me, I'm a nerd without his computer!

Hi Sean,

StyleXP has modified the ntoskrnl file (in an attempt to change the splash
screen). You will need to extract the file from withing Windows XP Recovery
Console.

Description of Recovery Console:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314058

If that does not help, perform a repair installation of Windows:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=315341
(A repair install will undo all the hotfixes and service packs applied
earlier. So, you will need to re-apply them later.)

The above response is RIGHT ON THE MONEY.

Might I add......... be VERY careful when downloading, and apply XP
bootscreens from the web! Bootscreens made on an XP system will crash
on a XP- SP1 updated system, and vise versa. The two versions of the
ntoskrnl are NOT interchangable.
There are many free tools available out there that allow you to change
the bitmap in a copy of your own ntoskrnl........ much safer than
taking a chance with a file you don't know the origin of.
