before i get started this is my first post here..... and here are the
system specs.

AMD Athlon 64 3800 AM2
M2N4-SLi Mobo
OCZ Special Ops Edition DDR800 PC6400 DDR2RAM (1 x 1GB Stick)
BFG Tech 7900GT OC 256MBGDDR3 256Mbit
LG GSA-H10L DVD/CD BUrner w/ Lightscribe
Western Digital 250GB 16MB Cache SATA2 Hardrive
Thermaltake 430watt PSU

ok so me and my cousin were building a computer for the first time and
we did pretty well. We had some issues with the heatsink though, as
we forgot to take the bottom plastic part off the heatsink. anyways,
long story short, we did fix it, but we applied a hell of a lot of
force to get it on and to try and take it off. now the next issue we
ran into was horrible system instability. it would freeze or hang
most often at the asus m2n4-sli screen, sometimes before, sometimes
after. we had no f'ing clue wut we were doing wrong, so i took it
back to my house and played with it. we also had to replace the psu,
as the one that came with thge case didn't have a 24pin mobo
connector. we ended up solving the stability issue (we think) by
moving the ram stick into the second slot of the motherboard. now
only once out of about 40 boots have i had it hang in the bios setup.
anyhow the problem is that everytime i got to install any version of
xp (i want to do pro sp2, but i have also tried home sp2 and pro sp1
upgrade just to make sure it wasn't a disk issue) to install, some
file causese an issue and i get an error message, suck as...

-File \1386\htkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. ERror code is 4. Setup
cannot continue. Press any key to exit.

-File aarich.sys caused an unexpected error (18) at line 3540 in
d:\xpsprtmlbase\boot\setup.c. Setup cannnot continue.. Press
any.....

-Line 10315 of the Inf file \i386\txtsetup.sif is invalid. Setup
cannot continue. Press blah blah blah.

or the system will hand at loading windows executive or hardware
abstract layer. it has even shut itself down. is it possible that
we damaged the mobo while fooling around with the psu and heatsink?
the psu with 20 pins we did use untill we learned better of it, and
we have no idea wut the hell is wrong. i have beeing screwing around
with knoppix and hirens boot cd aswell, and nothing boots. are there
bios setting s i should change? remeber this is my first time, i have
followed a megazine artivle, but no luck so far. PLEASE somebody tell
me nwhere we went astray... thanks fir the help.

Yes. You broke it. The processor was probably damaged and perhaps the
motherboard also. The only way to test if it is just the processor is to
put in a new processor, installing it correctly this time.
