Building Problem XP Freeze on Install

HELP!

Ok guys I've been stumped. I built this computer about a week ago and had
some trouble installing the processor. The computer's specs are...

P4 2.8 ghz processor

1 gig 400 mhz ddr

80 gig hard drive

an ASRock mobo
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=13-157-034&depa=0

everything else is run of the mill

While putting the computer together, everything was going fine until install
the processor. We put the processor in, ended up putting too much thermal
compound on, then tried to put on the heatsink which didnt go in at first,
and then we thought it was in, we were wrong. We flipped one latch, fine.
The other latch my friend did, and he pushed way to hard and it snapped the
latch. The heatsink was not on right, and we had broken the latch. We
recentered the heatsink and attempted to put it back on, we were actually
successful in doing this, but also we put a lot of pressure on the cpu and
mobo. Then we built the rest of the computer and its been fine. Now while
trying to install XP, it freezes. We initally thought it was the memory.
We bought new memory and tried it out again and we got the same result. Then
we tried different wires in the comp, still no luck. Today i bought a new
cpu for the computer and still, it freezes on install or restarts while its
working. Is the next step replacing the motherboard? And does that mean
that the original processor has been fine all along? This has been horrible
because im building this for a friend and nothing has worked. Geek squad
suggested also that my mobo ASRock has had a bad reputation with heat
dispertion, so we think maybe it was the mobo or the processor overheating,
well it wasnt the processor, so now do i check the mobo? Any help would be
great, thanks!

You could have damaged the MB using too much pressure. Too much compound
is not good either. You've found it's not that easy putting a system
together. At this point you don't have any other option but the MB
replacement.

Are you getting any thermal alarms from the MB? I'm not familiar with
ASRock MB's but a review said it was an offshoot of ASUS. I've had bad
luck with those and won't use them anymore.
