New AGP VIDEO Card

F

Fred

I have an onboard video chip that uses shared memory. I also have an AGP
slot and have just purchased a new video card that I plan to install in
that slot.

Need some advice on the order of things.

I plan to Uninstall the onboard video using Control Panel. Next I plan
to turn off the PC, open the case, plug in the new card, connect the
monitor the new card, and turn the PC on.

Then I plan to go into the BIOS and set the graphics memory share to
zero and save that setting and reboot.

I assume WinXP will "find" new hardware and ask for the drivers.
I would then point it to the CD that comes with the card.

Now, a friend noted that I might need to install the video card software
first and then install the card, etc.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks, Fred

The way you stated sounds fine. When it loads it will not find the
appropriate drivers and will install generic VGA drivers. The screen will
look strange but you can still then put in your CD and install the drivers.

Read your motherboard manual and read the manual for the AGP
card. Some require manually changing the BIOS, some will do
it automatically. Some may want the new drivers, either on
a CD or downloaded to your hard drive so you can point to
them when the hardware is "discovered."

Hi, you'd also be better off using the installation utility on the CD, if
you allow XP search for the drivers it may not perform a complete set up....
