I am trying to network a xp and 98 machine together
through a Lynksys router. Both will work on the internet,
but when I try to get them to see each other, they won't.
I have shut off all firewalls on both machines, including
the xp firewall, but to no avail. If anyone can point me
in the right direction, if there is one, or give me any
information it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have a similar setup and experienced similar problems. On your win98 box
enable the IPX/SPX protocol and make sure file & printer sharing is enabled
on both boxes.

1. Disable and un-install firewall programs while troubleshooting.
Don't just disable firewall programs. Un-install them, and don't
re-install them until everything else is working. Since you have a
router, your computers are protected from Internet hackers even with
no firewall running.

When un-installing a firewall program, use the un-install procedure
provided by the manufacturer . Don't use Control Panel | Add or
Remove Programs, which might not completely un-install it.

For more information, see:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/netbt.htm

4. Run "ipconfig /all" on XP and look at the "Node Type" at the
beginning of the output. If it says "Peer-to-Peer" (which should
actually be "Point-to-Point") that's the problem. It means that the
computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available on a
peer-to-peer network, for NetBIOS name resolution.

If that's the case, run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.

If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again, create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast" or 4 for
"Mixed".

There's no need for another protocol. Windows networks work best with
a single protocol, especially when XP is involved. Installing an
additional protocol on even one computer can make network browsing
unreliable.

Hi:

I am having EXACTLY, EXACTLY the same problem.

If you find a way to do this please let me know and I will
do the same.

thanks, schroeder

Hey! this worked! An MVP suggested uninstalling any
firewalls. I was using Zone Alarm. All I did was uninstall
it, re-boot, and I can now see my network from all boxes.

thanks!

uninstalling it was only to make sure it was infact ZA.
so u know that ZA was blocking the connection, reinstall ZA and setup enter
the ip's of the local machines in the trusted zone.
