Networking with CAT 5 crossover cable and dial-up modem

Kathy

Yesterday I asked for help with this problem, and so far
no one has given me an answer. I am in a real mess and I
need help badly.
I am trying to connect to computers both using xp, both
on dial-up and only 35' feet apart. We have connected a
CAT 5 crossover cable to both computers and were told
that would be all we would need. However, there is
something else that needs to be done, because we are not
linked. We have gone through the network wizard but
still we are not connected. Is there anyone out there
that can help? Please!

AS POSTED YESTERDAY!!!

Here We Go!!

First of all make sure that the Workgroups have the same name. Right-click my computer, go to properties. Press the Computer name tab, and call them both the same. Note that the Computer name should be different but the Workgroup should be the same. (You may have to restart at this point

Now open up Network Connections (Start> My Network Places) and click on the "View network connections". This is where it gets a bit tricky! On the Primary computer which has the internet and maybe a printer you want to share right click the Local Area Network Icon In front of you and go to properties. Click on TCP-IP and go to properties. Select the box which says use the following IP Address, In the IP Address fields put 192.168.0.1 Subnet mask should read 255.255.255.0 and lastly in the perfered DNS Server put 192.168.0.1 The rest of the field should be left blank. Click Okay and restart if necessary. We are now finished with this computer for now so lets go to the second computer

Open up Network Connections again (Start> My Network Places) and click on the "View network connections". On this computer (secondary) right click the Local Area Network Icon In front of you and go to properties. Click on TCP-IP and go to properties. Select the box which says use the following IP Address, In the IP Address fields put 192.168.0.11 Subnet mask should read 255.255.255.0 Now defaul gateway put 192.168.0.1 and lastly in the perfered DNS Server put 192.168.0.1 The last field (alternative dns server) should be left blank. Click Okay and restart if necessary

The computers should now be shared. If you want to share internet or printers, reply to me and I'll post a repl

Are you sure you used a "cross over" cable" What are the results of
ipconfig /all on both computers?

I use cat5e cables on my home netwok for a wile
already, in your situation just buy a 10/100 ethernet
switch ($20-$40),(I use Hawking Technoloty 5port) and
things will be mutch simpler.
the ethernet switch scans the connections and auto
connect patch or crossover cables. does't matter whitch.
If you use other then xp (2000,98,95)just make a setup
disk at the end of home network setup, and use it to
setup on other pc's home network connections.(all the
ethernet already phisically connected evry pc)
some PC's might require a password to logon at the
begining of windows star up,just makeup something and
remember it for next time.
after that just restart evry PC (server or guest) and
Youre up and running.
it should be painless,in case you need more help,
I will be back.
