Network problems with XP since reinstalling

G

I had to reinstall XP on my desktop and now I can't get online through the
network router I have even though the laptop on the same network connects
fine. I have tried the Network wizzard and it comes up with an error.

I have also tried installing a spare broadband modem I have (directly to the
phoneline and not on the network) and that wouldn't connect either. I even
tried an old 56k dial-up and it got so far before disconnecting itself.
Obviously there's a config problem but I don't know where to start....would
reinstalling XP put something in the AOL software to cause this?

If you have SP2 installed, it turns on the XP firewall by default and the XP
Firewall is not compatible with the AOL software. NOTE: DO NOT RUN WITHOUT
ANY FIREWALL. If such is included with your AOL Software, use that, if not,
check for third party firewalls that are compatible with AOL.

To turn off the XP Firewall, Open Control Panel, open Windows Firewall,
select Off and click OK.

If the above does not fix the issue or is not the issue, please take this
question to the windowsxp.network_web newsgroup:
