Network Problems with Win2000 and win98

hi
never posted here before, just read alot ...
hope someone can help

OK here it is.
I have 2 computers, one with win2k and one with win98
they both have ethernet cards, and are connected with a crossed cable.
they both have the same workgroup name and static IP addresses
eg 192.168.11.1 and 192.168.11.2 (not the real ip) and same subnet
mask.
255.255.255.0 as it should be.

I have the same user name and password on each computer.

the win2k is connected to the internet so i want to share that with
the 98 computer and share files too of course...

from the 98 computer i can ping only itself but not the win2k computer
- request times out error comes up.
for a while the 98 machine could ping the 2k but in my meddling
somehow I stopped that happening ...
from the win2k computer i can only ping itself, when i try to ping the
98
machine i get 'request timed out'

I have TCP/IP and Netbeui on both machines. I have netbios on the 2000
machine but i cant seem to find it on the 98 machine. - is this
necessary ?

the win2k shows both computer in the 'computers in my area' but can
only browse
itself not the 98 machine - then i get the error message "ABC is not
accessible"
"network path not found" (workgroup is ABC)
I have enabled internet and file sharing on both computers and have
selected files to be shared but sill nothing.

As far as I know I have no firewalls. unless they automatically came
with win2000 or win98. and if there is one on either computer - how do
i find it and get rid of it ?

I have checked all cables are connected well.

I dont know that much about computers I am just muddling through the
best i can ...

I read just about every post I could find about this problem but
couldn't find
any solution so far. it could be simply I forgot to tick a box
somewhere even
though I have rechecked it a billion times I could have missed
something ...

any suggestions how to get this thing up and running ?

thanks in advance

I have tried about everything I can think of or find on the net.
Some peopel said it looks like the crossed cable is in error because
they wont ping. But It is a new cable so I dont think so. I just got a
new network card tio replace an old one which I thought didnt work but
it could be just the cable - I might have bought a 3rd network for
nothing if it IS the cable...

hope someone can help soon ! I really need this up and running for
work ..

thanks

bye

Hi first thing is get rid of Netbeui tcp/ip these days i
sthe only protocol you need then disable th einternet
conection sharing on both machines you only need it config
on one machine the one conectted to the internet the w2k
machine by the sound of it the. get rid of the static ip
for the time as when you re-enable the ics it will look
after the ip, 192.168.0.1 will become the w2k machine as
this is the default ip that ics uses unless you treak it i
would just leave itonce you have config the w2k machine
just leave the win98 machine on obtain an ip the ics will
hand out all the ip needed for it. if you need a static go
through the above do a winipcfg write down all the ip iunc
the gateway & enter them in all this should make it work

hope to here good news
