Connecting Win2000 to Win98 via Crossover

I have been trying to set up a crossover network at home. I have a crossover ethernet cable and an NIC in both machines. The network appears to be established( when i check the connection on the win2K pc it says enabled with 300 packets sent and usualy 0 recieved ), but I cannot see the other computer from either machine. I tried to ping from one machine to the next and I get request timed out.

Windows 2000pro
using IP 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
This pc has Dial up internet access which i intend to share with the other PC.
ZoneAlarm Firewall

Windows 98
using IP 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

you must have not made a perfect crossover patch cable.
Check for flashing lights on your LAN card. If you dont
see lights flashing, connect both the machines and go
to "network neighbourhood, properties, local area network"
What do you see? Disabled? Enabled? or Disconnected?
If shows D/C, check your cross cable again.
In your win98 use gateway : 192.168.0.1. and use DNS
192.168.0.1.
On your 2000, use IP settings as given to you by your ISP.
Share the Modem for your LAN.
Turn both machines on and ping 192.168.0.2 from w2k. If
you dont get a reply, your Zone Alarm is blocking ICMP.
Disable or uninstall Zone Alarm and try pinging again
until you get the reply. Once you get replies from
192.168.0.2 you have achieved half of your goals. Do R&D
and you will be able to connect.

Thanks for the info. I do have lights on both NICs. I
have the Win 98 machine at ip 192.168.0.1 and the 2K
machine at 192.168.0.2. Got the DNS configured like you
said. I can see the computers in network neighborhoodm,
but when i try to access is says

\\"computer name" is not accesable. The network path was
not found.

I have NetBeius and TCP/IP on. Any suggestions?

1. Check if you are able t ping 2k from 98.
2. If YES proceed.
3. share whatever files you want too on both machines.
4. Use SAME user..SAME as in 98 as in 2k. Ie. Log into
your 98 with user "Mark" If your 2k is logged on with user
Mark.
Should work.
Regards.
