Network printing

I have a three printers on a network and ten Pc's. Half the pc's can connect
to these shared network printers showing the full path as \\machine\printer
whilst half connect to these same printers and show as connected to \LPT1
which is physically not true. How can I get all machines to connect to shared
network printers showing the full path (\\machine\printer)as some
applications require that to\print?

Hi,

You'd have to explain exactly which printers are connected to what. You
don't mention how the printers are connected or whether you're using a
dedicated print server. Where you say "half the PCs can connect", it's
usually the "users" who "connect", not the "PCs".

Are you saying some of these printers are connected to PCs where people
are actually working? If so, those people would see it as a local
"machine" printer as opposed to an HKCU managed network "connection".

Hi Gerry
These three printers are connected directly to the LPT ports of three
machines. They have been shared and are available to everyone and these aer
connected where people work

Hi khnart,

A directly connected printer SHOULD appear as LPT1 to the person sitting
at that machine - it's not a network printer.

If you are saying users sitting at other machines, to which the printer
is NOT connected, are seeing them as LPT1, then that's a new one for me.

I have four PCs and printers set up in the way you describe, and
remotely they appear as 'printer_xyz on machine_abc'. It's a pure Win2k
network.

Can you clarify where you are taking these readings and why it's a
problem? Have you tried deleting the connection and re-connecting?
