Gentlemen / Ladies,

I bought myself a new Win XP Home Ed. PC for Christmas, and am having
trouble adding it to my office network.

My existing wireless network ties 3 Win 98 SE PC's together,
wirelessly, using Linksys Router & Wireless Adapters. My printer is an
HP Office Jet 4200 Series tied to one of my 3 PC's via a USB port. All
3 existing PC's can print just fine. No problem.

I temporarily placed the XP PC close to the 98 machine that has the
printer attached to it.

I went thru the 'Add a Printer' setup routine on XP, and, while I can
'Add' the printer, I cannot see any 'check mark' to the left of its
icon as I'm told I should?

To test the link / print ability on the XP machine, I tried to print a
Notepad document. When I choose 'Print' on the XP machine, I hear a
loud 'DING' on the 98 machine and the following error msg appears:

====================
"There was an error writing to USB001for the printer. There was a
problem printing due to an unknown system error. Restart Windows and
try printing again"
====================

Needless to say, a reboot accomplishes nothing. Same thing happens
again.

Now, at the same time the error msg appears on the 98 machine, On XP,
if I go to 'Printers & Faxes,' the following error appears under the
column titled 'Status:'

====================
"Ready"
====================

Since the printer icon is not 'checked,' as I'm told it should be, and
altho my network IS working fine, the problem appears to be that the
XP machine cannot 'find' the printer on the 98 machine, altho all the
other 98 machiunes can. :)

What to do? Help appreciated.

JoAnne,

Try the following: Click on Settings/Printers, left click once on the
printer icon to highlight it, on the top tool bar left click on File and
then click on Default printer. This should place a check mark on the
printer. Good luck and let us know if it works. Vic

Hi Victor & Toni, or is it Toni & Victor ?? <g>

Happy New Year and thank you for your reply...

I tried what you suggest below, but no luck. 'Default Printer' is not
on the list of choices.

Here is what's on my list to choose from:

Open
Printing Preferences
Sharing
Add Printer
Server Properties
Set Up Faxing
Create Shortcut
Delete
Rename
Properties
Close

I'm going N U T Z with this 'print thing' Oh poopers!

JoAnne,

Happy New Year to you too. I think that you may not be clicking the correct
mouse button. Here are the instructions again:

Left click on:
Start/Settings/Printers This will bring up all your printers. Can you see
your printer icon here?
Left click once on the printer of interest. This will highlight the printer.
Does it change color?
From the top menu left click on File, then left click on Default printer
which should be just below Open.

Let me know if this works.

One more thought. On XP go to Network Neighborhood or Network Places on your
desktop. Can you see the printer under the XP machine?

Vic,

On the XP machine the printer is listed, but the icon is 'greyed out.'
I can SEE a tiny 'check mark' on the icon top right corder, but can't
get the icon to 'color.' It stays grey.

The 98 machine does not have a page like xp, one that shows an icon,
but the 98 machine prints fine to the USB attached printer, as do the
2 other wireless 98 machines.

It's only XP that won't print. If I click on a .txt file on XP, a box
pops up saying that it IS printing, but on the 98 machine there is a
DING and the error msg I mentioned earlier:

If, on xp, I go to File and click Open, I see checkmarks by ''Set as
Default Printer' AND 'Use Printer Offline.' I don't know HOW the
'Offline' got ck'd and am not able to uncheck it.

Joane,

Sorry to hear of continuing problems. One more thought. When you set up the
network on the 98 machine I believe it also generated a set up disc for
installing the network on all other computers. Did you use this set up disc
on the XP. If not, try re-installing the network using this dis. If yes,
then I am out of ideas. Let me know.
