Network printer no longer recognized

Hi,

I have Brother HL-5250DN network printer hooked up to a four port
LinkSys switch which is attached to a LinkSys router. It's been
working great except all of a sudden the printer is no longer
recognized by any of our two computers. In fact, when I try to
reinstall the drivers from the CD the setup program can not detect any
network printers.

Any ideas? Why would this stop working all of a sudden? I have tried
switching the connections. The green light on the ethernet port on
the printer is on as are all the ones on the router and switch.

I'd rather not go back to hooking it up to my PC via USB as I don't
want my wife to have to boot up my computer just to print something.

Check the configuration of the printer to make sure IP address is still the same and there isn't a
conflict there.

How do I do that David? When I initially set it up on the network to
the switch I just ran the software that came with the installation CD
from Brother and selected either Peer-To-Peer or Network (I forget).

Now that you mention the IP address, my Internet Service Provider tech
guy came out here a couple days ago to replace a board in their
router/firewall outside the house (I have wireless) and to check out
why my speeds aren't up to snuff. He ended up moving the ethernet
cable from their box to the "Internet" port on my LinkSys router and
then reconfiguring both our PCs to obtain IP addresses automatically.
Previous to his visit, I had specified IP address for their router and
our PCs and was not using that "Internet" port on the router.

Any ideas? That change must have caused the problem!

From what you are saying above it would seem since the IPS tech change
your PC to DHCP from static he must have changed you network address.
The printer is more that likely still on the old IP address. The manual
on page 7-2 shows how to change the IP address of the printer. A copy of
the manual can be obtained from here.

http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/files/dlf/doc002003/HL-5250_5270_NUG_Ver1_EN.pdf

I would change the IP address on both PC back to static. Go to a command
prompt on both PC and type in IPConfig/all to see what they are set for
now and write the info down you need the following IP Address, Subnet
Mask, Default Gateway and DNS settings then go in to the network adapter
and change the setting to static use the recored settings. The address
with be come thing like PC1 = 192.168.0.100 and PC2 = 192.168.1.101 the
gateway maybe 192.168.0.1, these are examples only. Then when you have
the two PC setup going to the printer setting and use the same setting
as you did for the PC except the IP Address would be different Printer =
19.168.0.150 again example only.

After all is setup then then you should be able to ping the printer IP
address from both PC's.

You will then need to go into the printer Properties and change the IP
address there to the new address you gave the printer. Or it may be just
easier to delete the printer and add it back in.

Check the manufactures site for a manual to walk you through the steps. Basically there should be a
setting on the printer menu to change the IP address. It may already be set to get it automatically
from the router, if so you may be able to just power off the printer and then turn back on. It
should get a new address from the router at that time. If it is set to a static address then you
will have to go and change it your self.

Agreed, the change is likely the cause of the problem. I would guess
the printer has an IP outside the local range of the router.

I would try connecting a crossover cable directly from a computer to
the printer and see what the config utility does at that point.
