network permissions not working right - help

hi all,

I have a local LAN of 7 computers, 6 with XP Pro SP2, and one Win98se

I just recently did a fresh install of XP Pro on one of the machines, 3
partitions, C:, D:, and E:.

I setup sharing on the D: and E: drives full access. Lately I have been
unable to connect to some folders on the E: drive, I can view the files and
folders but can't copy or execute installation from another machine.

I have shared it from the top level E:... and yet certain subfolders will
not allow me to do anything but read the folders and files.

I have checked the D: drive as it is fully shared and is working properly,
and compared the settings, to the E: drive, they are all identical.. but
still it's not working right..

I started messing with permission settings, etc. and eventually had to go in
and take ownership to my "niteowl" profile, as I couldn't even access the
folders from the local machine. ??

Well, I have now setup the E: drive again, shared with "full control" to the
"everyone" and the "administrator", so can at least function on the local
machine, but still can't access ALL the folders from another workstation.

How can I "fix" this? Is there a way to "copy" the settings on the D: drive
that is working to the E: drive? Working with Permissoins, and sharing and
such is all very new to me, and very frustrating.

thanks,
niteowl

You mention the share permissions a lot - but what about the LOCAL NTFS
permissions?

news to me, what about them? where do I find them, what do they do?

I just finished another fresh install and am running into the same issues, I
have installed this same O/S on all these machines, why is this one doing
this??

Only difference I can think of is this O/S is installed on a SATA drive
which is on the third controller, I have to unplug the IDE drives for this
to install correctly on the SATA drive, but I did make it the first one in
the list in the BIOS.. yet when I tried to install XP Pro again, it was
still seeing the IDE drives as boot drive..

now that I have the O/S installed I plugged the other two drives back in,
but have not formatted them yet... I don't know if there is still an fdisk
function in XP like in Win98... that I could go in and completely wipe those
two drives and then make them logical drives for data storage or not. I'm
more concerned at this point with getting the sharing correct as all my avi
and audio files are on this machine and I can't access them from my main
machine.

Let me know about the NTFS permissions and I'll certainly check those out.
in the meantime I'll read the stuff Brian suggested.

thanks for the help

this was unavailable
HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP (Pro/Home)

I did this, took ownership using my "niteowl" profile away from the
"administrators" which was the current owner.
How to set, view, change, or remove special permissions for files and
folders in Windows XP -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308419

read this

ok, set it for Level 5, still will not let me execute the files... it will
let me see them, I can even import the file name (mp3) into the player, but
will not allow it to play, the message I get is: (in WMP),

"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you
might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your
proxy settings might not be correct."

the file is not in use, and I have no proxy settings, ?? Simple File
Sharing is disabled.

Anything else I can try? I have no idea why this stopped working, it's
worked for years before this. Could it be the SATA drive instead of the IDE
drives I used to use?

just fyi, to try something that worked on another machine, I went into
Windows Explorer, My Network Places/Entire Network/Microsoft Windows
Network/Workgroup, all the machines show, and I clicked on the "xxxxxxg"
expecting it to ask me for a username and password like one other machine
that was doing this did, but it opened up and let me view the drives without
having to enter anything??

I have also mapped the D: and E: drives on my main machine, and while it
will show the files, it will not let me act on them. (move, copy, or
execute) Well actually it will let me copy but not paste. ( I have a program
that gives me audio cue when something is copied)

I'm stuck!

thanks for your help, is there anything else to try?

read all this already, it ain't working! In some places it says I have to
be the "owner", but isn't that the same as me being a member of the
adminstrator group? or do I need to Add a "owner" to the list in the
permissions window. ???

No, "owner" is not the same ad being a member of the Admin
group. However, if you ARE a member of the Admin group
then you are authorised to seize ownership of a folder. I don't
really want to repeat myself but I have to: To see how you
can seize ownership of a folder, you click Start / Help and
look for help on "ownership". There is a lot of help in Windows
Help!

If the Help had been any, I wouldn't be here.
like I said, already done it... not working.

thanks anyway.

If you explain where you come unstuck in seizing ownership
of a folder then someone will expand on the help included in
Windows.

Brian et al,

I tried all the remedies stated here, changed ownership at the root level,
tried it at the folder level, tried resetting permissions at root and folder
levels, tried adding to the list (i.e. administrator, everyone, system,
users) set them all to FULL control, and apparently what ever needed
changing didn't, it must have been stuck or something... nothing worked.

What finally did work was to move the contents to another drive, delete the
folder it was in, defragged the drive(don't know if this was necessary, but
it seemed prudent), then created a new folder and this time the folder took
the sharing and permission attributes of the root folder (fully shared) and
I was able then to move the contents back and in those folders now I have
full access from my LAN.

It'll be a bit tedious, but it will work.. wish the other things had been
successful, but such is life.

thanks for all your suggestions,
niteowl
