Network path not found

I am DESPERATELY trying to network a wireless-enabled laptop with Windows
2000 to a desktop with XP.
I can ping the desktop, and in fact I can view the shared folders on the
laptop from the desktop. I am logged in on both machines with the same user
and password. I have tried EVERYTHING I can find on Google. I've tried
installing IPX/SPX on both, I've tried installing Netbui on the XP machine,
I've tried using static IP addresses, I've tried disabling the firewall on
both machines, I've tried selecting NetBios over TCP/IP. NOTHING! All I get
is "Network path not found"! It's driving me absolutely CRAZY!
Can anyone suggest ANYTHING that I can do next to get this working?

I cannot believe this! It appears that I've been tearing my hair out for
FOUR hours trying to get this to work when it seems that the problem was
that there was another wireless-enabled laptop active within two feet!

DUH!
