Network path not found?

I connect 2 laptops together using a reverse cable, both
are exactly alike: Win2k SP3, Client for MS Network, File
and Print Sharing and TCP/IP and I am logged on with admin
rights on both. On boot, APIPA kicks in and I can ping one
another no problems but a net use on C$ or any other share
gives me a Network path not found. I then install NetBEUI
on both and bingo! and can copy data from one laptop to
the other mapping the computer name instead of the IP
address. Why?

Note that the same laptops were used to copy data from NT4
to 2K whitout NetBEUI with no problems but 2K to 2K
without NetBEUI is a no go. I don't get it.

What if you try to connect using ip address instead of name?
Check the DNS setting and host file.
