network not working

I have 2 PCs

a PII 450MHz and P4 2.4GHz, both with XP Pro installed.

I am trying to network them together using the networking wizard in XP.

The PII has a PCI 10/100 Network card and the P4 has a motherboard with
integral Realtek network interface.

The drives for both network cards show as ok and no problems or faults.

I have connected them using Rj45 Crossover patch cable and tried a normal
connection using a 4way hub.

In all cases the two computers refuse to see each other over the network and
cannot ping each other, either if network is set to manual IP address or
automatic.

sometimes the PII has shown the P4 in its network places but refuses access
to it saying I do not have necessary permissions set, both users logged in
with administrator rights.

How can I resolve this problem, is there an easy way of testing the hardware
for faults (the Leds on the network cards seem ot indicate everything if
functioning OK.)

The only othe network device that shows up in the Network Places is the
network interface to my USB Modem for connecting to ADSL. I wish to share
this conection but when I use the network wizard and tell it to share I can
no longer access the internet through this connection. My ISP is V21.co.uk
and conection to the service is initially done through a dialup account
setting on the system.

Any help in resolving this issue would be most appreciated

NO , no firewalls installed and XP firewall unchecked. Although these are
suppose to make your system secure I choose not to due toinherent problems
with and interference when accessing resources etc.

Still can't get my home network to run ?

Do you have any firewalls running (including the XP firewall)?
