I'm trying to set up a wired network using a crossover cable.

I used the network setup wizard and the pc's have unique names and ip
adresses. The problem is that the computers dont see eachother on the
network, also when i go into command and try to send a ping request to each
pc from either pc, it says request timed out 4 times.

Please Help

I have a similar problem. I'm running XP on my host computer (desktop) and
the little computer icons are there and it says I'm connected at 100 mbps.
Internet Sharing works. I simply do not have access to either computer in
either direction. It used to work. I figured out how to make addition
folders available over the network. I got the printer to work over the
network. It suddenly stopped working around the time my daughter upgraded
MSN Messenger. I had to use System Restore to get things working again
because I kept getting MSN Messenger error messages even though I removed
the program.

It seems like I just need to change a setting somewhere but I've been
through everything I could find and it still doesn't work. I've uninstalled
Windows Network and reinstalled. I've tried to ping the other computer but
when I gave the command to discover the IP Address it came up blank. It
seems unlikely that it is a hardware problem since Internet Sharing works.

Brian,

First get connectivity working. Assuming you have a working crossover cable,
let's look at the configuration.

Provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

An underconfigured personal firewall, like WF in XP SP2, could be blocking your
pings. Is any firewall enabled?

Cheers,
Chuck

Brian,

You used the wizard to setup networking. You have a pair of connections on each
computer, so the wizard setup a bridge on each. Delete the bridges.

Are you running ICS on Brianpc ("This computer provides internet service to
other computers")? Make sure that the Ethernet connection gets 192.168.0.1
("Share internet service thru this connection").

When you get Brianpc and Danielpc able to ping each other, then work on file
sharing.

Here are a few websites with useful tutorials about networking and file sharing:
