Network Diagnostics Failed - now what?

I am having trouble with my local network. Client computers, and sometimes
the LAN adapter on the internet sharing computer cannot get an ip address
from the dhcp server. The network connections status says "limited or no
connectivity" and in fact I have no connectivity. I ran Network Diagnostics
on both client and ICS machines. Everything passed for the client. Several
Network adapters failed on the ICS machine.

The LAN network adapter had one failure:
pinging the IP address failed - request timed out (at this point, an IP
address had been successfully assigned)

The Internt network adapter had several failures - (but, it's not really a
network adapter, it is a Satellite modem. Maybe that explains at least some
of the failures?)
pinging the Default Gateway (different Subnet) - request timed out
pinging DNS Server Search Order failed - request timed out
pinging the IP address failed - request timed out

So what does this tell me - do I need a new network adapter? (The modem
should be ok - and it is communicating with my ips's dhcp server) Any help
will be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi shaphe,

Try resetting your Router. What Router do you have? On a D-Link Router
there is a Reset Switch you need to hold in, while it is on for about 10
good seconds. I had to do this.

Hi, thanks for answering. To answer your question - I do not have a hardware
router. I have a gateway computer connected to the internet vial a satellite
modem, and connected to the rest of the network through a switch. I think the
DHCP server resides on the gateway computer, but I know no way of monitoring
or resetting it. I have powered both modem and switch on and off, and
restarted all the computers.

Thanks,
Shaphe

Hello Shaphe,

Your did not say and it begs asking, has this configuration ever

Yes, we have had the network configured this way for at least three years.
It has had the ocassional hiccough, but I never saw this problem before. No
new software or hardware has been added. It was working ... then it wasn't.

Hi Shaphe,

Is there active Virus protection on the Gateway computer? Do you have a
Static Address with the Satellite system or Dynamic IP Address that keeps
changing.

If you have a Static Address, check the settings. They might have become
corrupted or you might have developed a bad Hard Drive sector. Run a
complete Chkdsk of all Hard Drive partitions that contain your operating
systems.

Virus protection is active. The IP address is dynamic. But anyway - it's
working again now. I called my ISP just for the heck of it, even though I
knew they wouldn't help since it was with my LAN. And they did say they
couldn't help, but just for the heck of it had me run through some basic
things like power-cycling that I had already done several times. But they
also suggested unplugging each plug on the satellite modem and running my
thumb across the ends to discharge any static. There are seven different
cables plugged into the thing, so I did that to each of them. No static shock
or anything, and no change in the problem right after. They said sorry, can't
help, and we hung up. But shortly thereafter, I noticed the client computer
was back on. Who knows.

Thanks for your help.
