Network Connection Folder Is Empty

I recently attempted to use a dial-up connection that I had not used for a
while. I knew that I would have to change one of the settings. When I went
into the Network Connections folder, I was shocked to see that there were no
icons in the folder. I should have a Local Area Network, Bridge, and
multiple dial-up connections. I tried to create a copy of a dial-up
connection under a different name. It temporarily showed up in the folder,
and then disappeared as soon as I double clicked it. I have verified that
both my modem and ethernet card are listed as working correctly in the
device manager. I have also noticed that I can see all of my dial-up
connections in the "Connections" tab of the "Internet Options" menu in
Internet Explorer. Does anyone know how to get the icons to reappear?
Thanks in advance! I appreciate your help!

Sorry for the follow-up details. I forgot to mention that I can connect to
the internet through the dial-up connections if I opent Internet Explorer
and it asks me how I want to connect. I cannot, however, see the
connections in Network Connections. Also, I tried to recreate dial-up
connections under the same names, and I am told that they already exist.
Once again, thanks in advance for your help!
