Network Connection Drops

All of a sudden one of my Windows machines has started losing its network
connection periodically. This seems to happen every couple of days or so.
The symptoms are that the PC cannot access any folders of the other 3
computers on the network or the internet. At that point the other computers
are having no problem with network access. I can fix the problem by
rebooting, but this is getting old. I am using Win XPSP2.

Is it a wired or wireless network?

If wireless:

1. What is the signal strength like?
2. Are you sure there are no other devices causing interference? Have you
tried changing the channel?
3. When you are disconnected does the icon in your system tray indicate you
have lost connection?
4. When this happens can you ping your router, other PCs on the LAN or
external web sites?
5. Is this PC further away from the router than the others that are not
experiencing problems?

Also check in device manager..right click your NIC..properties and on the
power management tab be sure 'allow the computer to turn off this device to
save power' is not checked.

Thanks. It was checked. Of course, so far as I know it's always been
checked. Anyway I unchecked it, and I'll see if that helps.

Open Device Manager, open the properties on your ethernet card, click
the Power tab, and deselect "Allow the computer to turn off this device
to save power".

I downloaded the Winsock Repair Tool, set a restore point, and did the
repair. I won't really know whether that did the trick or not until the
network connection is stable for a week or so. Thanks for the suggestion.

Use my Winsock Repair tool. Download it here

You really should not direct people to your filthy porno site that
you've created.

A proper, valid, ethical, quality, non-porn site would be:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/winsock.htm

As I reported in other replies I changed the power management option and ran
the Winsock repair tool. However, today the problem struck again. Same
symptoms, so obviously I haven't killed the bug yet. Any additional ideas
would be appreciated.

Perhaps the NIC is failing. Also try these commands to possibly reset
the connection; if one works, it could be quicker than the reboot:

Click Start, Run, type:

IPConfig /FlushDNS [Press Enter key]

IPConfig /Renew [Press Enter key]

IPConfig /Release [Press Enter key]

Also try a networking NG where such discussions are commonplace.
