Network cable is unplugged

Have PC and laptop with network slots and have tried 2 different cat 5 leads and everytime i try and connect keeps coming up with "Network cable is unplugged" Both are on windows XP! i am a beginner and would appreciate any help! We plan on using network for internet and maybe playing games and sharing files. Help me please!
 
hello

make sure the cable between them is a Cross Over Cable. NOt a normal one, they are about a fiver in shops.

make sure the work group names are the same. on both pcs
