Network Address Aquiring Error

I am having problems getting my laptop to connect to my cable internet. It
used to work fine as a direct connect, but last week I tried to set up a
wireless network so relatives could use their laptops to.

During that process I had to put a flash drive in my compter then into
theirs. We never got it to work right and did it once in reverse from theirs.

It is since that time I cannot get a connection to cable internet.

I have a desktop that connects fine so I assume its not the signal coming in.

The message I get is that its connect but with limited or no connectivity
and says
"network did not assign a network address to the computer"

Did the flash drive maneuver change a setting with XP that now block my
laptop?

Any help would be appreciated since I am at wits end.

Does the laptop use wireless or not? If yes, check the security settings, If not, this search result may help,

Troubleshooting limited or no connectivity"This connection has limited or no connectivity. " "You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources" ...

Currently not using wireless. Was trying to get wireless up and running when
this started so someone else could use their laptop.

I tried configuring manually the IP since it keeps doing itself with
169.254.x.x which from what I've been reading is bad.

It appears maybe my problem is tied with DHCP?? But I cant find anything
that lets me restore or fix this.
