Network Accessiblity and no WINIPCFG

ok,

I have 2 computers (desktop and laptop). In the past couple of days I
can no longer share files between the two systems. At times, the
laptop sees the desktop on the entire network, but it cannot access
the files and vise versa. I have Norton Antivirus and Autoprotect on
the laptop and some old McAfee software on the desktop. They are
connected by a router. My network firewalls are off. The only
firewall on is the Norton autoprotect but i configured the firewall to
allow network connections.
I also noticed that my laptop cannot run the winipcfg. Is any of this
related? Any suggestions? I read a Spybot Search and Destroy thread
about it removing notepad and such... could it be the cause of this
problem? (My notepad is gone as well)

WINIPCFG does not exist in Windows XP. Use the command line version IPCONFIG instead.

If your router has a built in firewall, disable all firewall software (Windows and/or 3rd party).

Update your AV software and rescan your systems (preferably in Safe Mode). Online scanners are available at:

Additionally, visit www.lavasoftusa.com for AdAware and www.safer-networking.org for SpyBot Search and Destroy. Don't just read about the tools, use them. And after installation, ensure that you check for the most recent updates for these programs.
