I am having problems with my computer running slow when I run my p2p program
but this has just started about a week ago. I have been running p2p for
sometime now about 6 months and everything has been fine until now. So here’s
what I have done to try and sort it out, a complete virus scan using Norton
(Updated it before I did scan) which came back ok I have run ad-aware which
found 9 critical objects which where all tracking cookies in the iecache
entry and 13 negligible objects type MRU List which where all removed.I also
did a disk defragmenter and a disk clean up.After that I rebooted my computer
only to find it still running slow when my p2p is running.I then phoned my
server and he told me to goto start then run type in cdm and then type
netstat and enter he then asked if there was more that one line to which
there was because my p2p was running and strate away he told me I have a bug
in my system and to down load a program called spybot search & destroy and
run it which I did and it came back clean he then asked me to run netstat
again without my p2p running which I did and there was only one line of text
so his answer to this was a to backup all my data and format my hard drives
and start again.I told him if I back up my files how do I know the so called
bug is not in one of them? His reply was “I don’t have a answer to thatâ€
Does anybody have any idea’s how to slove this problem without doing a clean
start? And also what and how can you tell whats what in netstat?

Gary,

There's a lot to answer here, not just technical issues.

To start, can you please try and write more clearly, and with less caffeine in
your system. This is Usenet, not an IM program. You can write your problem
report, and reread and edit it a bit before posting, and we will all be able to
help you better. Here are some tips.

Having said that, I would congratulate you on not having formatted your hard
drives simply because you are running a P2P program. I don't quite understand
what a "server" is that would give you technical advice, but we will pass on
that.

Netstat is a command line program that identifies open connections on your
computer. It is normal to have open connections, when you have P2P running and
when you don't. If someone tells you to reformat your hard drives simply
because you have a line of text in netstat, he is not somebody who, IMHO, you
should listen to.

So now back to the original problem. I would like you to read my article on
monitoring your computer. It's a place to start. Then ask questions here.
We'll try to help you.

Also, Spybot S&D is one program, of many, that are used to find malware. Read a
bit more about alternatives please.

Just slow down, and think as you type. We will be here when you hit the Send
("Post") button. Even if you spend an extra 10 minutes proofreading.

Well, if it's P2P that's involved, you'll have to learn to configure the P2P
program. P2P programs generate 2 way traffic - you get to download more when
you allow uploads more. If you have ADSL, your upload pipe is smaller than your
download pipe. My guess is that you're saturating your upload, and that limits
your download. With 2M down, you would typically have what - 368K, or 512K, up?

Gary,

It's not an issue of right or wrong.

When you surf the net with your browser, there's only so much surfing that you
can do at once, so you have virtually unlimited browsing bandwidth left over,
not used.

When you're running P2P, and you're downl.oading, you're also letting other
folks download from you. Their downloading is your uploading, and if you have
ADSL, your upload bandwidth is less than your download.

What do you have? 2M down / (768K / 512K upload - which?)? Your P2P program
will max that out, if not configured. When you max out your upload (saturate
uplink), your download (downlink) will suffer.

Now you can mumble about how it worked fine up to about a week ago. So what
changed a week ago? Without me being there in front of your computer, I can't
tell you magically what the problem is. So far I suggested additional malware
research, and additional P2P configuration. What do you want to do? I'll help
if I can.
