Netmeeting/VPN causes blue screen

Please help...

I'm trying to access my work PC from home. I am running
XP Home and I connect to the internet thru a Wireless
network and a DSL line. Once connected to the internet,
I have to use a VPN client to access work's network.
Once within the network, I need to netmeeting into my
computer using the IP Address.

I get the login prompt but once it launces the shard
desktop, my computer crashes. First VPN gets
disconnected and then I end up with a blue screen. THe
error message on the blue screen is
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

Any thoughts to the cause? Help would be most
appreciated!! I need to be able to work from home!
Thanks.

Do you remeber which driver at fault, it should shows on the blue screen or
hopefully, in eventlog.

No, it didn't say which device... But this is what I
found in the logs:

Error code 000000d1, parameter1 00000000, parameter2
00000002, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 f8370cb0.

and another one moments before had:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck
was: 0x000000c2 (0x00000007, 0x00000cd4, 0x02100000,
0xfa30a008). A dump was saved in:
C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini020304-02.dmp.

I looked at the dmp file, and I can't seem to open it...
Any help would be most appreciated!!

let me check around see how I can get your dmp file, meanwhile, is there any
special VPN software you use or the one comes with XP HOME? what's the
version of netmeeting you running? I look up microsoft.com and latest seems
to be NetMeeting 3.01 (Build 3396).

Look at my post on 1/30/04. This seems to be a common problem with VPN
software and XP. I still have not got VPN to work on my Dell laptop, and I
have tried two different VPN clients: Intel Netstructure and Nortel
Contivity. Both result in blue screen crashes. I had the same problem with
my desktop computer using Intel Netstructure VPN. It simply would not work
and caused almost constant blue screen crashes. I worked on this problemfor
two months. I finally solved it by replacing the Realtek NIC shipped with
my Dell 4500 with a 3Com NIC, Now the computer works perfectly with VPN.
Obviously a driver conflict, but how do you solve it on my laptop. I can't
change the built in NIC.
(I, too, have the dump file from my laptop but it's binary and I can't find
a program to read it)

NetMeeting comes with XP--I don't think you can install any alternative
version.

The dump files can be read with Microsoft's debugger. You need both the
debugger, and the symbol files for your version of your OS. There is,
fortunately, an automation command to get a quick automated read of the
dump. Let me see if I can get you some URL's for this stuff.

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/ddk/debugging/default.mspx

You need to set the system variable _NT_SYMBOL_PATH= to the location of the
symbol files you download before running windbg. I've done this by working
at a cmd prompt, setting this by hand, then running windbg.

You want to open the DMP file in the debugger using the open crash dump
option under file menu. Then go to the KD window at the bottom, and try
this command:

!analyze -v

Even without the analysis--the debugger may well show you which driver is
involved immediately.

This stuff is not for the average user, but it is possible to get a bit more
information out of the mindump without a great deal of expertise.

Here is the information on the versions I am using:

VPN Dialer: Cisco Systems VPN Client. Version: 3.6.3(B).
Client Types:
Windows, WinNT

Windows NetMeeting Version 3.01 (4.4.3400)

Thanks again for your help!

Thanks a bunch Jerry. It sounds as though we do have the
same problem. I actually get connected but then it's the
netmeeting event that triggers the crash.

I'm actually using a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop, so maybe
it's a Dell thing?

Tina & All-
I think it's more of a Windows XP problem. I have used these same VPN
clients with 98, ME and 2000 and have never experienced a problem. It all
started with XP, both on my home computer and laptop. (But, they are both
Dell) It would be interesting if Huei Wang could analyze both of our
mini-dump crash files to see if there is a common driver conflict. I am
just about at the point of formatting the laptop hard drive and going back
to Win 2000. Both VPN programs (Intel or Nortel) have crashed the laptop
computer since I upgraded from 2000 to XP Pro.

Well, I can look at it or involve the right person.

But this is public newsgroup and I don't think you want anyone to get hold
on your dmp file, is the email address shows on your posting correct, can I
email where you can upload the dmp file.
