.Net security update

Having small problem with updates to dot net 2. I go to Microsoft Updates
(rather then just Windows Updates) and it has listed (1) update for dot net
2 security update. Install update, but there is no record of it being
updated in add/remove or <start> <explore> <windows> $uninstall KB??????.
When I return to Microsoft Update it tells me (again) that there is an
update but "it is already downloaded and ready install". OK! I do the
install again and the same thing happens. No mention of the update
anywhere. (also, Update has a download for MSVM waiting to be downloaded. I
don't have MSVM on this machine. Where's this coming from?)

What I did was uninstall net2 and didn't reinstall it. I've had no problem
without it which means it is not used by any web I go to. I decided why load
it if it isn't needed?

However, I do need dot net 2 and have downloaded the latest version to try
and correct the problem. Still get that message from MS Download. I will,
in future, uncheck the download so we don't have to go through the problem
continuously.
