Need to make Outlook default. Followed directions. Doesn't sync

I followed the directions. I clicked tools, options, other and then checked
the box that says "Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts and
Calendar." This didn't work. I usually use Mozilla Foxfire/Thunderbird as
my defaults. My iPhone won't sync with the Outlook calendar unless I make it
the default. Please help.
