Make sure you have the most recent drivers.

Windows XP does NOT need drivers for a mouse as it has it's own mouse
drivers.
I have changed mice 3 or 4 times and never installed drivers.

That is true, but it is also true that the original manufacturer may
have better drivers available or even the Windows drivers may have been
updated. In fact there are times that those Windows' updates may be the
cause of problems. That is why I suggested looking for newer drivers.

Finally t'was the mouse. I was sorry to trash it as it was a good
mouse with wheel and web buttons (as Microsoft Intellipoint Mouse Web)
but too slow in the motion.
