when I installed the latest update on windows xp, i lost
all my destktop icons and now everytime I turn on the
computer it tells me that it has to check the file system
C, that one of the disks needs to be checked for
consistency. this goes through a long process and checks
all files and folders, what happened?

The 2 vital areas for a healthy system are to do regular

maintenance, and to scan for the bad stuff. So run the
disk cleanup tool, and do a defrag, and look in the Event
Viewer for error messages. Then run scans for viruses,
worms, trojans, and for spyware/ adware to remove.
