Need help with Zip Drive

When I insert a disk into my Zip 100 MB Parallel Port drive, the
comment "please insert a disk into drive D:" comes up,
although the disk is already in there. This happens with only one of
my disks; unfortunately this is the disk that is nearly full and has
years of useful data on it!

When I insert other disks, the drive clicks once; when I insert this
particular disk, it clicks twice as if it is hesitating. As I
mentioned before. the drive reads other disks but not this one.

Is there a way to have this drive read this disk just once so I can
back it up?

If not, and if I have to send the disk out to a Data Recovery company,
what would it cost?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

It is apparent that the zip disk has failed. If the disk will not read,
the only recourse is to send it to a professional data recovery company
like Drive Savers (my preference) or Seagate Data Recovery. General
prices run from $500USD on up. Drive Savers recovered all the data on a
failed laptop drive for one of my clients and it cost $2,700. He thought
it was worth the money; only you know what your data is worth. I
understand that some insurance companies are now covering data recovery
charges under "Loss of Intellectual Property" so check with yours.

Consider moving from zip disks as a backup medium to something more
robust such as cd/dvd-r.

Just a suggestion. Look at the small triangular area in the upper left
corner of the backside. Make sure there is no dust on it.

While the possibility is very good that the ZIP disk has failed or it
could also have become less compatible with this particular ZIP drive.
Further attempts at trying to get the parallel ZIP drive to read it
may only exacerbate the situation, potentially resulting in the click-
of-death. Before sending to a professional recovery outfit, test the
ZIP disk in another, working ZIP drive, preferably an internal SCSI
or ATAPI one.
