Need help with scanning speed issues on HP Officejet 7410...

hi there-

was hoping to get some help with an issue i'm having with scanning on
my HP Officejet 7410 all-in-one machine...namely that it seems not to
process properly when scanning multiple pages through the ADF.

when i'm scanning multiple pages through the adf, what happens is that
the lamp moves (from right to left) all the way next to the exit point
of the adf. so far, so good. the adf then feeds the first sheet past
the lamp, while the lamp remains stationary. again, that seems fine so
far.

but the problem is that when it's done scanning that first sheet,
there's a large time delay introduced because the lamp seems to "reset"
by slowly moving all the way back to the right side, a delay of a
several seconds while there's a noise being made, and then the lamp
slowly travels all the way back to the left side, ready to scan the
next sheet.

this activity between sheets greatly slows down the scan speed from
what it could be if the lamp just stayed on the left side next to the
adf. and in fact, that's exactly what happens when i'm faxing multiple
pages instead of scanning them. the lamp moves to the left, next to
the adf exit, and stays there as multiple pages are moved past it. i
thought the process for faxing and scanning was similar, in that in
both cases it's basically scanning the pages.

any ideas on how to fix this? or if it's even fixable? part of me is
wondering if it's just the fact that when i'm scanning, the file size
is bigger and that during the time it takes to transmit the file to the
computer the lamp times out and resets. (i have the printer connected
wirelessly, which may also contribute to that. but i also tried
scanning to a memory card inserted directly into the officejet thinking
that would be a way to avoid transmission delays, but that didn't seem
to help).

if it's not a problem that can be fixed with this scanner, any
suggestions on another scanner? 30% of usage will be multiple page
text documents (e.g., bills, etc), 50% will be scanning single page
text/graphic items (e.g., birthday cards, kids' drawings), and 20% will
be scanning photos.

thanks!

Hello,

I know what you mean. I have an older officejet which does the same
thing. I never thought much of it until I started working in the
document imaging field... now watching that scanner gives me a
chuckle...

but, to answer your post: check out the hp website for any firmware
updates. there may be a patch to adjust the firmware of the scanner
hardware to skip that recalibration step. If not, or even if there is a
fix... check out this post I sent someone else. I think you'd love it!

I'm not sure if you've had a chance to see the Fujitsu S500 yet.. but
if not, it's exactly what you're looking for.

S500:
With a 50page ADF Chute

2x 600dpi Optical CCD cameras for single-pass duplex scanning

18ppm/ 36ipm

auto cropping, content-based deskew

auto color detection

always scans to pdf (unless you have pictures or illustrations which
you want scanned to jpg)

auto file encryption (128bit strength) with either: preset key you
determined or a prompt will pop-up after the batch is completed
allowing you to set the password.

Saves automatically with the naming schema you decide on- auto prefix
and counter combination, date/ time stamp, etc...

saves anywhere your windows pc has rights to save, including mapped
drives

auto blank page deletion

tiny footprint

and the list goes on...

check out:
http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/computing/peripherals/scanners/wor...

for more details

the best part is that all these features are automatic... you just
place the stack of documents, and press a button directly on the
scanner. This is the perfect scanner for daily scanning up to 250 -500
pages.

The general perception/ opinion of MFP's is that they're decent for
doing the multiple tasks... but tend to excel in any of them. mediocre
scanning, printing, copying.. more ideal for the person who might scan
once or twice a week vs. a couple hundred or more pages a day. Try it
out and see for yourself...

Hope this helps...

Danny
