Need help with font/text/icon size!

After wiping the hard drive clean and starting over (the PC locked up
and I had to hold the power button to get it to turn off, and sometimes
when I do that I turn it back on and get a blue screen that says
Stop!...etc. and then a bunch of other stuff with numbers like 0X0000.
When this happens the only thing I can do is wipe the hard drive clean.
Maybe you could also tell me how I can keep from getting this screen
when the PC freezes or locks up and I have to turn it off that way, or
how I could possibly fix things and save my files if it happens again),
I start over only to find that everything is bigger. The little user
account pictures, the icons on the desktop, and everything online.
Basically everything is bigger and the fonts look different. Well,
I've had to wipe the hard drive clean before, so this isn't the first
time I've had this size problem. I always managed to get it back the
way I like it before, but now I can't. I go tot eh start menu, then
control panel, then appearance and themes, and then to dispay. And
somewhere in there I changed it before. This time nothing I try gets
things looking the way they were before. The screen resolution can be
slid to either less or more. Moving it to more makes everything look
normal or nearly normal, but everything is too small. I need something
in between. I don't know how I did it before.

You need to install your video drivers, unless the video card is recognized
by xp the default resolution is 256 colors, pretty lame.
to find out wht the stop error is, you need to get the exact numbers and do
a search
for it on google or yahoo.
it could be a hardware conflict.

When I go to display-settings-advanced-adapter it says I have
VisionTek XTASY 9200 series (adapter type), RADEON 9200 series AGP
(0x5960). Is that what you mean by video drivers? (sorry, I'm showing
my ignorance now)? I didn't even have that before when I managed to
fix this. I just had what the PC came with. And about the blue
screen, I read that you can correct this by popping in the Windows XP
installation disc. But we don't have one. It just came installed with
the computer and I don't remember ever having one. Another thing is,
the last time this happened the Quick Restore CD that I've always used
to wipe the harddrive clean didn't work. It said there was an error
and it couldn't start it and to contact Compaq. Cleaning the disc
didn't help. So I had to use the Recovery discs, which took a lot
longer, and it actually had to reinstall windows whereas with the Quick
Restore disc it restored it to factory conditon with windows and some
other things already installed. And it had some wierd box with
different options on it on the desktop. When I choose to reseal the PC
(not really sure what that means) it finally went away.
