Clean install

My PC had Windows 98 on it. I wanted to do a clean insatll meaning wipe out
everything on the hard drive (all files, users, everything - start new and
fresh) I did the Windows XP advanced install and selected NFTS and thought
it would wipe the hard drive clean but it didn't. It didn't copy the users
settings but it kept all of the data. How can I install Windows XP and wipe
the hard drive completely clean?

You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
Click on or copy and paste the link below into your web browser address bar.

Thank you the installation is going good so far but I am confused about your
step 15:
15. When you see the "Press any Key to Reboot" do not Press any Key. If CD
boots anyway, remove CD and reboot.

What should you do instead of pressing a key? Do I take out the CD manually
before it restarts?

Actually I now see what you mean by step 15, disregard the previous post BUT
during the installation I received an error that the setup could not copy
about 100 files such as mcicda.dll or mciseq.drv or lwngmadi.inf (most of
them were inf files) It gave me the option to retry which didn't work so I
hit the Esc key which was the option to skip it. HOw concerned should I be
and what should I do?

:

If your computer boots from the CD without any interaction from you
(pressing the designated key on the keyboard) you must "remove" the CD
PRIOR to the first reboot during the install of the operating system. If
you don't, you will be stuck in a loop and will never complete the install.

Remove everything except the mouse, keyboard and monitor and repeat the
clean install. It is most likely a hardware problem. Also make sure the CD
is free of any smudges or scratches.
