Need help to re-install printer

Recently I was trying to reduce the number of items that start-up
automatically with my Windows XP. I made a change that appeared safe.
However, now, when I try to print, I get this message:
"Print
Before you can perform printer-related tasks such as page steup or printing
a document, you need to install a printer. Do you want to install a printer
now?"

When I click "Yes," I get this message:
"Printers
Operation could not be complted. the print spooler service is not running."

I ran the set-up program for my HP Officejet 721- All-in-One printer, but
that did not fix it.

How can I get back my printer capabilties? I will appreciate advice!
