Need help... removing Norton messes up XP

I have a new eMachines PC with WINXP.
It came with a trial of Norton Internet Security. I am trying it.
But I don't like it, and want to remove it.
I removed it and XP had problems. The program icon tray on the lower right
disappeared. And some programs could no longer connect to the internet.
Notably replacement programs.

Help?

Which version of NIS?
