Hi i just got Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, and tried installin
it, but i came across a few problems. I have Windows 98 at the moment
and when i get to copying the files, i have errors saying 'erro
occurred copying file ntdll.dl
C:\$win_nt$~ls\1386\system32\ntdll.dll'
i was going to skip it and carry on, but it asked if i was sure
wanted to do that, so i didn't. So i guess i want to know what i can d
now? what i can do to get past that error message? anyone help? thank
anyway!
I tried the changing CD-ROM as first boot on the BIOS thing, but wher
do i go from their, after i saved cd rom as first boot, what do i d
then to get it started? Thanks anywa

Boot from the cd by shutting down the system, inserting the cd in the drive,
and restart. Don't do this until you have fully qualified your system to
run XP.

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective, incompatible, or sub-standard hardware;
in order of likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard.
On very rare occasions the CD drive or installation CD is the problem.

Have you verified that all of your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:

You should also take a few minutes to ensure that there are
WinXP-specific device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many models
in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class
Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective or substandard hardware (particularly
motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.

Thanks for all the help. I have no idea what to do though lol, way too
confusing!? I attempted to do that boot of the system, but what do you
mean by fully qualifying system?
What i did try to do was put CD in, reboot, press delete to go into the
options and clicked BIOS, then put CD-ROM as first option startup, and
saved it, but it didn't do anything and just started windows 98 as
usual. Is it worth even trying anything? i dont want to lose anything
on my computer that i have now, but i have no clue about computers at
all, so i dont want to risk doing something wrong?!

Make certain that the system has n o malware
Make certain that the system meets the minimum requirements for XP
Backup all important data
Make sure that the disk has no errors
Have available XP drivers for all of the hardware
Get updated software as needed

After you enabled booting from the cd as the first choice, you must reboot.

Before installing XP, disconnect all hardware that is not needed to perform
the installation.

You may find it better to perform a clean install rather than an upgrade. A
clean install will wipe out all of your data and remove all of your
programs. So be prepared for some serious work.
