Need Help Installing ATA 2906 SCSI

G

geezer

I bought a PCI SCSI card on EBay that came with no software (drivers).
The card is Adaptec's 2906. I am running WXP.

I have tried downloading the few drivers that I can find, but none
seem to work under WXP.

I want to use this card with the UMAX Powerlook II scanner.

EZ-SCSI is suggested in what little documentation came with the card,
but I can't download the LITE version of that software, and I refuse
to pay over $50 for software that I cannot be sure will even work.

I find no posts of any version(s) of EZ-SCSI.

I had the scanner working fine on a W98SE machine using a ISA card, so
I know the scanner works, but I need the scanner to work on my XP
machine.

Help me before I drown please.

If you go to adaptec's website they have win2k drivers (but i did not see
any for XP)

If you have not already tried the win2k drivers, they *might* work with XP.

For the time and money you may have to spend to get that SCSI scanner
going...
you might just be better off with getting a hole new USB scanner

Mebbe so - but I think it is the SCSI card not the scanner.

Hello again

I managed to paste the quote into the middle of what I was saying which is that
XP already has support for that board as far as I can tell.

So doing a driver update and having it search the internet is the way to go?
IT should find the driver on the MS site if it's not already on the PC.

Here's the thing -

After I installed the AVA 2906 SCSI card (PCI) and booted up XP PRO
SP2, I get the 'Found New Hardware Wizard' which wants to 'help me
install software for the UMAX Powerlook II (scanner). That would say
to me that drivers for that scanner are not included in XP, and that I
need to install them.

Anyway, Device Manager shows 'Adaptec AIC-7850 PCI SCSI Controller'
and 'VAXSCSI Controller' under 'SCSI and RAID controllers'. The
second was there before the card was installed. That would say to me
that XP created the 7850 driver in Device Manager for this card (I
don't think it was there before). I don't know what the 7850 is, but
maybe the 2906 is functional, and I only have to somehow get the
Powerlook II scanner to start working.

Thanks for your helps.

This is really weird!

I finally found a driver on driverguide.com that seems to work - it is
called Vista355.
I downloaded it - unzipped it - installed it, using its setup.exe.
Seemed reasonable.
At that point, Device Manager's 'Scanners and Cameras' showed the
Powerlook II scanner for the first time. I'll save it of course.

However, XP's 'Found New Hardware Wizard' insisted that it is finding
'new' hardware which it wants to install. I tried both of it's
'automatic' and 'advanced' method with same result - all it does is
add another entry in Device Manager under 'Imaging Devices'. Right
now I have six duplicative entries called 'UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner
Device, all of which are said to be 'working properly'.
In the same place I have two duplicative entries called 'UMAX
Powerlook II', and they both are said to be 'working properly'. And,
I cannot uninstall any of the first six. They seem to be locked, and
are said to be needed for boot. What makes matters worse, I cannot
get rid of the 'Found New Hardware Wizard'. It comes up in every new
boot, and won't go away even if I try another installation. All I get
is another entry in Device Manager.

Despite all this, I downloaded and installed MagicScan V4.5, and find
that it works just fine, and
the Powerlook II scanner seems fully functional.

So - if I can just get rid of the 'wizard', I can probably live with
what I have. But how do I do that?
Help!

You don't say what happened when you followed up then with the UMAX installation
- or didn't you do that?

I wouldn't worry too much about what it wants to call itself so long as
something was installed there by XP either from HD or your XP installation CD.

That's what was needed previously, not another driver.

What I do in cases like that is remove everything and start from scratch with no
scsi or UMAX drivers. I don't have XP running at the moment so this is from
memory, but go into Device Drivers from Control Panel-->System and remove the
scsi drivers. Check Add/Remove Programs to see if any of the software is there
and delete it if it is. This all needs to be done before you re-boot so that it
can then install everything fresh.

I'm with you on this approach - as I have done this on other unrelated
problems before. However, as of right now - I can uninstall
MagicScan, which I did, but there are no other apps in 'remove
programs'. Further, I cannot delete or uninstall any of the entries
in Device Manager's SCSI drivers (described earlier) or any of the
entries under 'Imaging devices' (described earlier) or the Powerlook
entry under Control Panel's 'Scanners and Cameras'. The system just
hangs when I try any of them. Cool eh?

Thanks

Just to make certain that I understand what you mean, and I'm not sure that I
do, what do you get for Properties of the scsi card in Device Manager? Will it
show Driver Details or is it greyed out or? Did you say that Uninstall there
hangs your system? or is greyed out? What about Update Driver? Doesn't it give
you a wizard?

Since my last post, I did finally get rid of Device Manager's
'Scanners and cameras' entries (They disappeared when I re-booted
after I uninstalled MagicScan). I am still left with all the entries
under SCSI Controllers and Imaging Devices. They are not grey'ed out.
I cannot uninstall them or delete them.

Properties for the duplicative 'Imaging Devices' drivers say the
driver is working properly, but is 'not digitally signed', and when I
choose to uninstall, it warns me about doing it, but when I click on
OK nothing happens (hourglass). When I x-out of the window it says
the program is not responding, asking for the usual error-report to
MS.

The identical scenario happens when I go to properties for the Adaptec
Scanner driver under SCSI Controllers.

Thanks

suggestion though. I'll try safe mode again, what the H.

This time when I was in safe mode, Device Manager did not show
'Imaging devices' at all, and it let me uninstall the 2 SCSI drivers.
Hmmm

Anyway, when I restarted, naturally WXP recognized the presence of the
SCSI card and loaded the same drivers as before for it (in Device
Manager). I now have 8 (yes 8!) duplicative entries under Imaging
Devices - all labeled:

UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device

Device Manager's 'scanners and cameras' has nothing under it.

And last, but not least, the 'Found New Hardware Wizard' window sits
there looking at me - I simply cannot get rid of it.

Thanks for your interests. I'm not going to do anything further for
awhile - I hope someone has an idea or two.

Yes that is what you had asked for!

I was wrong. I said that because the scanner was working. But now I
see that the wizard window is seeking driver for the scanner I think.
It says Powerlook II.

Sorry.

Drink one for me

The main problems seem to have started when you:"found a driver on
driverguide.com that seems to work - it is called Vista355. I downloaded it -

Since a re-install over what's already there wouldn't make things any worse, why
not try that setup.exe again to see if it gives you an uninstall option. If not
then cancel out. Failing that, try disabling it this way. I don't know how many
files you got along with that setup.exe, but if a .inf file was among them then
you know the name. Otherwise look in the windows "inf" folder for something like
maybe "vista355.inf" or similar. If you find it, then simply add BACKUP to its
name. Then you should be able to delete the devices again without worrying about
that driver getting reinstalled again.

I guess you said the scanner was working (scanning documents to image files
ok?), so your twain & aspi layers must be ok, but don't forget the aspichk from
the goaround with the isa card.

I re-installed vista355. Device manager had the following BEFORE I
installed vista355:

Imaging Devices
UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device
UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device
UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device
UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device
UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device
UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device
UMAX PL-II SCSI Scanner Device
UMAX Powerlook II

SCSI and RAID controllers
Adaptec AIC-7850 SCSI Controller
VAXSCSI Controller

DEVICE MANAGER'S SCANNERS AND CAMERAS
Nothing

And of course the ever-present 'New Hardware Wizard' window is present
and un removable for UMAX Powerlook II.

AFTER I installed vista355:

Identical, but Vistascan was added to 'installed programs'. I find no
way to execute it however. It is not in Start>All Programs.

I found AEC671.sys among windows inf's. I deleted it.

I found all of the Powerlook drivers above in the Registry, but it
won't let me delete any of them (says there is an error).

I should add that MagicScan is out of the picture and NOT installed.
