need help games wont play

I recently had my computer rebuit and had windows 2000
replace windows 98. Since then very few of my childrens
software games will play without locking up. I know they
say made for windows 98 on most, but does anyone know any
reason they should not be playable on windows 2000. It
seems crazy to me the microsoft would make a new systems
that is not compatible with older software. Please help.
I am not very computer savvy so please speak english.
