OK...Here's the situation.

Last night (10-16-2003) at approximately 10pm EST I was
looking around on the internet and I got my notification
from Windows XP Home that I had some updates downloaded
and ready to be installed (as I have it setup to do that)
so I installed the updates (again, as usual) and it told
me to restart when it was done. I restarted as usual BUT
here is where the problem comes in......

Upon restart, the system would load up normally to the
Windows XP screen (with the little green scanner bar
thingy at the bottom) and right before it goes black and
then loads my sign-on screen, IT REBOOTS!!! That is as
far as it will go...it keeps cycling this process!!!

I have no idea what happened...I couldn't get into
anything. I tried the repair option from the windows
setup disk and it didn't work, it kept doing it.

Finally (out of frustration as 2AM) I decided to
reinstall XP. That went just fine and I am on the
computer now. HOWEVER, (problem #2) I lost everything I
had, sort of. Its still on the hard drive (I can find it
at the command prompt and with explorer) but I can't
access it. EVERYTHING I HAVE is there...

How do I get it back, if I even can??

Please, SOMEONE, respond ASAP

Begging for help, as this could cost me my job...I even
tried the system restore, but it only lets me go from
today when I put XP back over itself.....

PLEASE HELP!!!

Sincerely,

JT

Perhaps I should clarify...though I appreciate what you
gave me...it may come in helpful.

When I log onto the "new" windows...I have NOTHING
there...I added the my computer icons and that sort of
thing...but its not that I am denied access to the
files...

When I try to open any of the exe files within the
folders for the programs I had on before the reboot
cycling began it gives me an error message regarding
different dll files.......and then suggests reinstalling
the applications...

Do I have to sit and reinstall all the apps manually,
because I can see all the dll files right in the folder
with the exe file for the program, or is there some way
to "mass recover" my previous state (pre-cycling) other
than system restore???

Thanks again,

Still in need of big help,

JT

Just like what the previous post hinted, read on Taking Ownership.

A perfect example of why you should not have your
computer automatically download and install updates from
M/S

You could try sorting it out in Safe Mode, Mike. Restart your PC and keep
pressing F8. You get several options. Meanwhile, I'm sure a MS-MVP will soon
be on your case.

Take ownwership of your file and folders:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421

PS: Booting into Safe Mode and running System Restore likely would have
been the best way to go, other than avoiding Auto Updates in the first
place.
Here's hoping you have found your files by now.
