Need for Speed - Porsche Unleashed

I cannot seem to get this game working properly. First of all I know about
the swap file problem and deleting gimme.dll, this is a totally different
problem. When I launch the game, many of my drop down menus are empty
(transparent). I cannot select cars or tracks because of this. If I attempt
to run the game anyway, the track loading screen comes up and when it tries
to load crashes to the desktop. I get a box saying "This application has
caused an error and needs to be closed". Does anyone have any idea what
could be causing this? I've listed my computer information below. This
problem seems to occur no matter what video card driver I use, even the
Microsoft supplied version.

ATI Radeon 8500
Pentium III 1.4 GHz
512MB PC133 SDRAM
ASUS TUSL2-C (i850E)
Windows XP Home SP2

Thanks for any suggestions
