Hi John,
Creating Dual Boot or Multiboot environment is easy with Windows XP.
If you already have another Operating System (OS) such as Windows 98 installed and install Windows XP, it will recognize the other
OS and setup a boot menu.
This menu will appear each time you start your computer, allowing you to choose
which OS you want to work with. This is all part of Windows XP.
You can install XP into the same partition as 98, or into it's own partition.
If you install XP into the same partition as 98 however do NOT format it.
If you already have XP installed, and need to install 98 to create your dual boot
you can. Do NOT install 98 into c:\Windows as XP is using that folder, and do
NOT format the C: drive or you will delete your XP installation.
After you install Windows 98, XP will no longer boot. To correct this, you will
boot up from your Windows XP CD, choose "Recovery Console", enter the
password for the "Administrator" system account (it's the [Enter] key by default),
and then type: FIXMBR C: and press [Enter] then type FIXBOOT C: [Enter].
FIXBOOT will repair or create the bootup files XP needs such as boot.ini.
FIXMBR will fix the Master Boot Record of your hard drive / partitions.

| Hi Jimmy,
|
| Since the CD loads/runs fine on my laptop with Win98SE I
| think it's OK. I've tried it in both the CD-ROM and CD-RW
| drives on my desktop (WinXP Home) and it does the same
| thing in either drive . . . so I don't think it's a drive
| issue.
|
| I read the XP repair install page you referenced and am
| nervous about doing that. Since I still have nearly 40 GB
| of hard drive space available I'm more inclined to load
| Win98SE "partitioned" to support use of older games. Can
| this be done with the XP loaded as is and then adding
| 98SE?? Is it likely to work if I try to install 98SE
| using the CD(s) that came with my Compaq Presario
| laptop?? Are their instructions available somewhere on
| how to do this and set up the partition???
|
| thanks, John
