Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Version: 5.00.2195 Service Pack 4
Internet Explorer: v 6.0.2800.1106
Outlook Express: v 6.00.2800.1106
Single PC with 1 user.

I use my PC most days.
Typically from 9AM to 11PM
I rarely install software now I have everything I need.
Currently my computer is running fine.

I am not concerned about saving on
power bills but wish to preserve the life
of my machine. I have 4 hard drives.

What is the best for me:
1 Turn off the pc every night ?
2 Put it on standby ?
3 Put it into hibernation ?

Any help or advice appreciated.

If you google this subject you will see that it is the topic of a religious
war. Read the views of others and make a choice.

I did goggle and, as you say, it's like a
"religious war" - so many conflicting opinions.
I posted her in the hope of a definitive answer.
Your point is taken though - I guess I have
to make my own choice.
Thanks for your reply.

Thanks David

| I think this is a debatable subject, however, I hope the information below
| helps. In general, if you are not concerned about power, leaving the PC
| running at all times, will more than likely be the same as truning off
every
| night.
|
| What's the Difference Between Standby and Hibernate?
| In Standby mode, power is saved by shutting down the hard drives, fans and
| monitors. These are high power consumption devices. The computer still
uses
| power to save the data in memory, so you can restart very quickly
(however,
| if power goes off while in this state, the data in memory will be lost).
|
| In Hibernate mode, XP saves the data in memory to the hard disk. Then the
| power is cut off completely, so this preserves more battery life. When you
| restart, it takes a little longer because the data saved on the disk must
be
| restored to memory. Of course, this method uses disk space to store the
| memory data.
|
| If you're using the XP theme view, you might not see the Hibernate option
| when you select to shut down the computer. First try holding down the
Shift
| key to cause the Standby key to change to Hibernate. If that doesn't work,
| hibernation might not be enabled. Go to Control Panel | Performance and
| Maintenance | Power Options (or just Power Options in classic view). On
the
| Hibernation tab, check the box that says Enable hibernation and click OK.
|
| Hope this helps!
